Carbon\nfootprint is a concept to measure the climate impact of an\nindividual, product or action, within a certain time period. For\npeople, carbon footprint is often measured per one year, and for\nproducts and actions, per their entire lifecycles. The Finnish carbon\nfootprint includes emissions from products and services used in this\ncountry but produced outside Finland. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Finnish Environment Institute\u2019s calculations<\/a>, an average Finn\u2019s consumption carbon footprint is circa 11,000 kg per year. There is great difference between individuals, and there are different years, too. The colder the winter, the more we use energy, and the less hydropower available, the more fossil fuels are needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition to individual consumption, an average Finn is responsible\nfor public sector\u2019s emissions which make 2,000 kg per citizen. This\nis generated from running the society, including social services,\nroad and other networks, and defence forces. To reach the climate\nobjectives, our carbon footprint must be reduced by half during this\ndecade, while increasing the amount of carbon sinks, which in Finland\nmeans increasing forest area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenhouse\ngases are emitted when we use fossil, carbonaceous fuels to produce\nenergy, transportation, or foods and goods. In a combustion reaction,\none carbon atom merges with two oxygen atoms, and burning one kilo of\ncarbon produces more than 3.5 kg of carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, greenhouse gases are emitted from industrial\nnon-combustible processes, including the manufacture of cement and\nnitrogen fertilizers. Deforestation, bog drainage, and other\nmanipulations of the environment also produce CO2 emissions into the\natmosphere. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
