Row houses only form 14% of the Finnish housing stock, but their share of new construction is increasing. On average, row houses are more energy efficient than detached single-family houses because the apartments have less exterior-wall surface area in relation to floor area. Most of the Finnish row houses are heated by district heat and a small portion by oil. More and more often the main method of heating in a row house is complemented with an air-source heat pump.
For reducing carbon footprint, a row house offers a combination of possibilities compared to detached and apartment houses. Like single-family houses, row houses provide more roof and yard area per unit, which allows better use of solar energy and self-sufficient gardening/cultivation. Like apartment houses, row houses allow joint investments, which is one way to reduce costs.
